1996 Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garçons vest in grey glen check wool with polychrome floral embroidery.

The combination of traditional menswear cloth and decorative embroidery reflects a wider thread in mid-1990s fashion, when designers including Watanabe, Dries Van Noten and Dolce & Gabbana were mixing classic European tailoring with folk and non-Western textile references. Watanabe adds another tension here between the masculine language of the suiting material and the distinctly feminine, corset-like shaping of the pleated waist and peplum.

Condition details: Excellent vintage condition overall. Exceptionally well preserved, with no stains, tears or significant wear observed. There is one tiny pinpoint hole in the checked wool, largely concealed within the pleating and not noticeable when worn. Otherwise, the garment shows remarkably little wear for its age.
