Balenciaga Edition tunic dress, circa 2004, from Nicolas Ghesquière’s archival reissue project for the house. Launched in 2004, Edition faithfully recreated designs personally selected by Ghesquière from Balenciaga’s private archive of more than 500 Cristóbal Balenciaga garments. The process involved meticulous research into the original fabrics and construction; sourcing the appropriate materials was so exacting that some Edition pieces took years to realize. Ghesquière described the result as “new, never-worn vintage.”

The tunic was one of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s defining innovations, introduced in 1955 and repeatedly revisited through the 1960s in increasingly varied fabrics, colors and ornament. This Edition example carries that archival vocabulary into a richly figured cloqué and a loose, stand-away silhouette that can be dramatically reshaped when cinched at the waist.

Per the original owner, this example dates to circa 2004 and was inspired by the Vienna Secession.

Condition details: Very good pre-owned condition overall. The dress presents beautifully, with no holes, tears, loose threads or other structural damage observed. There are a few areas of very faint discoloration, which are difficult to discern within the variation of the patterned textile. The matching scarf has one small surface mark, shown in the photographs. Overall exceptionally well preserved, with the cloqué retaining its texture and structure.
